Omega-3 Supplements Do Not Appear to Slow Cognitive Decline
Even though fish oil pills are among the most popular dietary supplements in the US, this major study of 4,000 older persons with age-related macular degeneration, concluded that "oral supplementation with LCPUFAs or lutein/zeaxanthin had no statistically significant effect on cognitive function."

4. THREE SECRETS FOR PERSONAL HAPPINESS AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS
by Dr. Alan Zimmerman
Do you know what you really, Really, REALLY want? Out of life? Work? And relationships?
Through a variety of surveys, I've asked 100,000 that question. By far the most common answer people give is "I just want to be happy." Well, that's fine. But what does that mean … to you? After all, if you can't define it, you can't get it. The second most common response people give to the question is "I want to be a success." Again, nothing wrong with that. But have you taken the time to clearly outline your definition of success? Most people haven't. When you know what you really, Really, REALLY want, it will transform your life, work, and relationships. I know. It happened to me and to thousands of my clients.
I call it The Payoff Principle. Expressed as a formula, it says Purpose + Passion + Process = Payoff. When you tap into these three secrets, you'll have everything you need to be extraordinarily happy and outrageously successful… on and off the job. My new book and workbook The Payoff Principle: Discover the 3 Secrets for Getting What You Want Out of Life and Work, lays this out in step-by-step fashion. But you can get started on that path right now.
Secret #1: Purpose -- Clarify it and live it.
One of my audience members talked about the problem of being in sales without a purpose. Even though he was a semi-successful insurance salesman, Tom never thought it was that important of a job. So he dragged himself out of bed, five days a week, for 30 years, to do something he didn't care that much about.
What about you? Have you taken the time to clarify your purpose at work and at home? Have you figured out your own definition of success? Could you stand up, right now, in the midst of a staff meeting, and give a five-minute talk on your definition of success that goes beyond quotas and dollars? Do you know exactly what you would say?"
Most people couldn't give such a talk because they've never given much thought to their purpose. So it's no wonder their careers aren't going anywhere, or their relationships are less than satisfactory, or they end up broke when they're retired.
Well, let me assure you that you do have a purpose. And it is much bigger than merely going to work, collecting a paycheck, and paying off the mortgage. That's survival, but it's not purpose. After all you are here to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
In Chapter 4 of The Payoff Principle, I give you the exact questions you need to ask yourself so you can define your purpose.
Secret #2: Passion -- Fire it up and keep it burning.
Passion is not some nice-to-have soft skill without any bottom-line significance. Price Pritchett, author, consultant, and entrepreneur extraordinaire, says, "In my opinion, the single most important factor for success in the business world is a high energy level." And I would say the same true for any aspect of your life.
Being passionate about your profession … your product, service, team, customers, marriage, health, faith, and a hundred other things … transforms the best in you. And yet, I realize that lots of people do not have the passion or energy they need for greater success.
Maybe you're one of them. Maybe you're wondering, "What exactly goes into this passion thing? How do you get all fired up and keep that fire going?"
That's what part 2 of The Payoff Principle is all about. There's little need to know what your purpose is if you don't have the energy to do anything about it.
I've learned that good, healthy, lasting, abundant, and effective passion has three components, very much like a fire. For a fire to burn—and produce meaningful payoffs—it needs fuel, something like wood, oil, or coal. It needs oxygen to keep on burning. And it needs guidance, something like a fire ring, so it burns in the right direction.
The fuel of Passion is attitude. Simply put, the research is overwhelmingly clear. Positive attitudes tend to bring good results and negative attitudes tend to bring bad results.
Of course, an ineffective person says, "I can't help the way I feel. That's just the way I am." Wrong! Attitudes are changeable. You can feed your mind a steady diet of positive input and change your attitude for the better … and get significant results, almost immediately.
The oxygen of Passion is persistence. Superstars are persistent, no question about it. They keep on doing something until victory is achieved. I recently interviewed 12 of them … from CEO's, to Mr. Universe, to New York Times best-selling authors. They're powerful interviews that should be listened to time and again. And I'm actually giving audio copies of those interviews away so you can benefit from their wisdom.
Yeah, the power of persistence. Take Thomas Edison, for example. He's always praised as one of the world's greatest inventors. But he should also be praised for being one of the world's greatest salespeople. Without his ability to sell bank after bank on lending him the money to continue his experiments, he would have soon been out of business.
And Albert Einstein, who is always praised for his brilliance, said, "It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer."
Could the same be said about you and your career? I hope so. If not, there several little tricks you can use to keep on keeping on.
And finally, the guidance of Passion is character. You need that for your own self-respect as well as the respect of others.
In its simplest form, character is doing what's right for everyone involved. It's focusing on what's good for you and others, without any hidden motivations or secret incentives determining your behavior.
Fortunately, there are a few questions you can ask yourself so your life and career are marked with character. You'll find those questions in Chapter 8 of The Payoff Principle.
Secret #3: Process -- Do it the right way.
No matter how many skills you have, you'll always lack some skills. Unfortunately, the losers excuse or justify their lack of skills. They say such things as "I could never do such and such."
Or just as pathetic, the losers wait for someone else to give them the skills and education they need. They say, "It's my company's job to give me the training I need. It's not my responsibility." Try saying that in your next job interview and see how far you get.
On the other hand, the real Producers (as I call them in The Payoff Principle) take responsibility for their lives and their careers. They go after the skills they need. Not only for the sake of continuing education but for the ultimate goal of self-empowerment, so they go from one level of success to another.
Does that describe you? If so, there should be some evidence of continuing education and self-empowerment in your life. Perhaps you read a chapter a day in a book that will keep you on top of your profession. And perhaps you listen to a motivational recording as you drive to work, picking up the information and inspiration to become a more effective human being overall.
But an effective sales Process also means that you turn from wisecracks to wisdom. Everybody has opinions. But Producers carefully choose who they will listen to. After all, the reason a lot of people never get ahead is they keep on paying attention to the opinions of the ignorant. Your brother, for example, may be a wonderful man, a good husband and father, and a great gardener. But that narrows the range of his valid opinions to marriage, parenting, and gardening. Not to getting ahead in your career. You see, people are quick to dispense advice on any subject, regardless of their qualifications to do so. It makes them feel important. They rarely give any thought to their qualifications. They just spout out their opinions. That's why Producers must carefully choose who they listen to.
As an author and professional speaker, I help my clients create strategies that will make them more positive and productive. But then those same clients are assaulted by an ignorant coworker who says, "That will never work."
Unfortunately, none of those opinion givers has any expertise in personal and professional development. None of them has spent the 30 years of time and research on the topic as I have. And that's why super salesperson Dan Kennedy tells his audiences that "people have a constitutional right to their ignorant opinions, but they have an entrepreneurial responsibility to ignore them."
To be precise, there are four Processes that will ensure your success. That's what Chapters 10-13 of The Payoff Principle are all about … simple things you can do right now … to get huge payoffs for a long, long time.
Getting ahead, winning, succeeding, being a peak performer, reaching the top, being a Producer is NOT a mystery. It merely takes an understanding and use of The Payoff Principle, where Purpose + Passion + Process = Payoff.
I know this formula will work for you. In fact, I'm so convinced of that, I'm giving everyone who orders a copy of my book (The Payoff Principle: Discover the 3 Secrets for Getting What You Want out of Life and Work), a number of extra bonuses to ensure your success.
