2. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE
How to Become a Diabetic Faster
While writing about our new prediabetes CPE program (see above) we came across the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) latest Xtreme Eating Awards. Three of the top nine were "awarded" to The Cheesecake Factory, though CSPI says the 150-outlet restaurant chain could have easily swept the entire list. According to CSPI: "The chain's Bruléed French Toast, a plate of custard-soaked bread, topped with powdered sugar and served with maple-butter syrup and bacon, would require one to swim laps for seven hours to burn off its 2,780 calories. The meal also has almost five days' worth of saturated fat (93 grams), 2,230 milligrams of sodium (more than a day's worth), and 24 teaspoons of (mostly) added sugar."
ACTION STEPS: Share CSPI's complete list with your patients and loved ones, available at http://www.cspinet.org/nah/xtreme2014.html, to help them avoid high calorie foods when eating out. Also help them become more knowledgeable about healthy eating and weight control. When you enter the keyword "weight control" in the search field at www.easyCPEcredits.com you will find 20 different CPE programs on this topic, including our latest The Prediabetes Diet Plan (C253).(See the previous paragraph.)

4. HOW TO Get PROMOTED FASTER--Part II
By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RDN, CSP
In the last issue of this eNL (6-7) I identified seven specific strategies designed to help you get promoted faster:
--Be visible
--Don't be a "squeaky wheel"
--Solve problems
--Do things your boss does not like to do
--Make your boss feel good
--Act as if you own the place
--Go beyond the expected
Now let's take a look at seven others things you can do to get promoted faster:
Invest in your most important resource
Yes, you can get promoted! How? By becoming the best at what you do by reading, studying and engaging in continuing professional education, training and development. And don't fall in the trap of just doing the minimum 75 CPEUs per five years. That simply allows you to be compensated at the same rate like everyone else. If on the other hand you want to earn more, you have to learn more. What if your employer is no longer willing to pay for it? Pay for it yourself! Can't afford it? Face it--you can't afford NOT to invest in the most important resource you own--yourself!
Fake it till you make it
No matter how tough things are for you, always choose to exhibit a positive, can-do attitude. Let's face it; none of us like to hang out with negative "stinking thinking" people. No matter what happens to you, your attitude is always your choice. So choose to always--yes I do mean always--exhibit a positive attitude. Because if you do it consistently your subconscious will internalize it and cause you to behave accordingly. (Psycho the mind controls "soma" the body.) If you like help with this, devour my "Develop a Positive Attitude" CPE program (C230 or 230e), http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/C230CPEcourse.html. It's approved for 10 CPEUs.
Do a self-assessment
Pretend that you are an entrepreneur or a consultant who is selling services to a client (your employer). To make this realistic, compute your daily compensation. Be sure to add your benefits. If you are not sure how much that is, add 30%. Then get in the habit of asking yourself: "Have I created more value today than my daily compensation?" Consistently being able to say "yes" to that question, will dramatically increase the probability that you get promoted. Repeat that question every working day. You may even find it helpful to place a nice looking sign on your desk that says: "Have I created $_____ of value today?"
Say good things about others or nothing at all
Even though just about everyone seems to complain about something or someone--don't be like everyone, be the exception. Don't gossip, whine complain, or say anything bad about anyone. And right along with that, avoid office politics like the plague. And by all means, distance yourself from people who engage in any of these counter-productive behaviors.
Become an expert networker
No matter how much value you create, there is still a chance that you'll get passed over. It's simply a sign of the times and in many cases has nothing to do with you. And when you decide to look for better opportunities elsewhere, your network, more than anything else, will determine how fast you will find your next dream job. To test your networking effectiveness, ask yourself who you have been eating lunch with during the past week. If it is pretty much the same people, you are missing tremendous networking opportunities, opportunities that you won't be able to bring back. So start today to get in the habit of eating lunch with different people four out of five days a week, to sit with people you do not know at meetings and to attend conferences that are sponsored by groups you don't normally hang out with. Also make sure that you have an electronic networking site established such as Facebook and Linkedin. (To join mine go to https://www.facebook.com/wolfrinkeassociates?ref_type=bookmark or https://www.linkedin.com/home?trk=nav_responsive_tab_home.)
Keep your finger on the company pulse
Make it your business to know what is going on in your company or organization. You can achieve that by attending all senior level meetings you get invited to, reviewing your organization's website at least once a week, and if you are part of a public company, setting a Google alert for your company so you have a better sense of financial and other significant challenges.
If all else fails--don't panic--negotiate
So what to do when your boss tells you that you won't get promoted any time soon? Whatever you do, don't panic and don't get angry. (It is very likely that she does not like this any more than you do.) First find out why. If the answer is to save money, point out how you could be creating even more value if you were promoted to higher levels of responsibility. If your boss does not buy it, offer to prove it to her without any risk on her part, for example by working in the new job for a specified time (say 3 months) at your current compensation. Have her agree that if during that time your performance exceeds her expectations to promote you at the end of the trial period. If that does not work negotiate for a pay increase or an increase in outher benefits in your current job. (Believe it or not you are negotiating from a position of strength because it's very likely that your employer want to keep you.) So negotiate for the best deal you can get. And don't be timid. (After all, what are they going to do, not promote you?) To help you get all you can, read my "Win-Win Negotiation" CPE program, http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cepd.html#C184. It's even on sale right now. (Save $60 [40%], see paragraph #3 above.)

6. HUMOR BREAK
Importance of carbohydrates, courtesy of Jay Leno:
Although a lot of people are on these low-carb diets, dietitians say be careful, because you need carbohydrates because carbohydrates create a chemical in your brain that cheers you up and fights depression.
So the next time you see a guy on a ledge, about to jump ... throw him a doughnut.
