HEALTHY OBESITY APPEARS TO BE A MYTH?
A systematic review and meta-analysis of more than 60,000 subjects found that people who were obese, but did not have metabolic challenges, were 24% more likely to die over a ten year period, from such causes as heart attacks, compared to metabolically healthy normal-weight individuals. The authors concluded: "Compared with metabolically healthy normal-weight individuals, obese persons are at increased risk for adverse long-term outcomes even in the absence of metabolic abnormalities, suggesting that there is no healthy pattern of increased weight."
ACTION STEPS: Help your patients become more knowledgeable about the consequences of obesity and how to reduce it. When you enter the keyword "obesity" in the search field at www.easyCPEcredits.com you will find ten different CPE programs to help you with that.

4. MANAGE YOUR ENERGY: GET MORE DONE AND HAVE MORE FUN--PART 1
By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RDN, CSP
THE PARADOX OF "TIME MANAGEMENT"
In this electronic age, most of us who are faced with overwhelming demands respond by working longer hours. ("If I just stay another hour, I will be able to catch up," seems to be a common refrain.) Unfortunately, according to Tony Schwartz, the founder and president of the Energy Project, that "inevitably takes a toll on us physically, mentally, and emotionally [which] leads to declining levels of engagement, increasing levels of distraction, high turnover rates, and soaring medical costs." This in turn makes us less productive. So if we want to get more done we have to learn to manage our energy, not just our time, because even though time and energy are finite, energy, unlike time, is renewable. Saying that differently, we can learn how to make more energy, but no matter what we do, we can't make more time! So what to do? According to Schwartz, "paradoxically, the best way to get more done may be to spend more time doing less. [According to him] a new and growing body of multidisciplinary research shows that strategic renewal—including daytime workouts, short afternoon naps, longer sleep hours, more time away from the office and longer, more frequent vacations—boosts productivity, job performance and, of course, health." If we want to be more productive, we have to learn how to manage our energy.
THE FOUR SOURCES OF ENERGY
Human beings derive energy from four sources: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Physical
This core source has to do with managing your physical health, which is the foundation for the other dimensions of energy. It can be achieved by:
--Consuming a balanced nutritious diet. (You know how to do that.)
--Eating at least three balanced nutritious meals, including breakfast, every day. (I know you know this. Now the more important question: Are you doing it?)
--Eating lunch away from your desk or other work area.
--Getting at least eight hours of sleep a night.
--Taking regular "rest" breaks at least every 90 minutes; breaks that quiet the mind and relax the body, including naps, walks, and meditation, away from your desk or other work area.
--Exercising regularly consisting of cardiovascular exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, three times a week; plus strength training for at least 30 minutes per day, two times per week.
--Responding to serious challenges or stressors with rest, not more effort.
--Making vacations real vacations by totally disconnecting from all electronic umbilical cords.
--Using all allotted vacation days as true vacations.
--Moving more and sitting less.
--When it's time to get a raise, negotiating for more time off instead of more pay.

Emotional
This core source has to do with managing your emotional wellbeing, which can be achieved by:
--Starting each day with an attitude of gratitude.
--Making it a habit to focus on the positive, and the "good stuff", by mastering the "PIN" technique.
--Consistently practicing Management by Appreciation (MBA).
--Employing techniques such as deep breathing to turn off the fight or flight response.
--Managing conflicts and "negative challenges" without experiencing debilitating side effects by reframing negative situations through three lenses:
--Reverse lens—seeing it through the other person's "eyes,"
--Long lens—evaluating how you will feel about it in a year from now,
--Wide lens—focusing on what can be learned from the experience.
--Catching yourself and others doing things right.
--Mentoring, coaching and empowering others.
--Avoiding being a victim by taking full ownership and responsibility of all aspects in life by living in accordance with the axiom: "If it is to be, it's up to me"
--Making time for what is truly important such as spouse, family, and friends.
--Paying forward.
--Recognizing that to take care of others you must take care of yourself first.
--Reflecting on your accomplishments every day.
--Keeping a daily "gratitude journal" in which you record what went well throughout the day.

Mental
This core source of energy has to do with attaining mental clarity which can be achieved by:
--Being able to get in the "zone" by intensely focusing on only one thing at a time, for no more than 90 minutes at a time.
---Recognizing that multi-tasking undermines your productivity.
--Dedicating more time to high payoff activities in accordance with the 80-20 rule.
--Delegating, allocating, or ignoring low payoff activities.
--Completing high payoff activities during the time of the day that you are most productive (for most people that is first thing in the morning).
--Having total clarity of your fire-in-the belly goals.
--Completing all work in accordance with a prioritized to do list.
--Being "fully present" when in the presence of others.
--Mastering the art of "chunking" time by completing like items at one time.
--Answering e-mails only during your least productive times, and no more than two times per day.
--Setting aside at least one hour per week for creative thinking.
--Establishing an "interruption free quiet zone" for tasks that require total concentration.
--Completing a prioritized to-do-list as the last activity before going home.

Spiritual
This core source of energy has to do with the energy of meaning and purpose i.e. spiritual significance, which can be achieved by:
--Finding a job/career that lets you build on your strengths.
--Being in a job/career that gives you a sense of purpose, meaning and belonging.
--Having a job/career that you consider to be fun.
--Working for a boss/company that has a clear sense of mission, vision and core values.
--Having clarity and being able to live your life in accordance with your mission and purpose.
--Consistently behaving in accordance with your core values.
--Reviewing your calendar at least once a week to insure that you are actually allocating time and energy to what is most important to you.
--Allocating time and energy to be of service to others.
--On the way home from work, focusing on the most important people in your life—your loved ones.
--Once at home totally disconnecting from work by "cutting" all electronic umbilical cords.

A dietetic intern asked a very successful dietitian what the secret of success is. "There is no secret," said the dietitian. "All you have to do is jump at every opportunity when it comes your way." "But how will I know when the opportunity is there?" asked the intern. "You won't," said the dietitian. "You just keep on jumping."
