Latest study suggests that fish oil may not prevent heart attacks and strokes
This study reported in a recent issue of JAMA analyzed data from 20 studies, involving 68,680 adults, who had been chosen at random to take either fish oil or a placebo daily for up to six years. The study concluded that “overall, omega-3 PUFA supplementation was not associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiac death, sudden death, myocardial infarction, or stroke based on relative and absolute measures of association.”

4. ENERGIZE YOUR TEAM AT WORK AND AT HOME
Let’s face it—nutrition care is a team “sport.” No matter what your current role, sooner or later you’ll end up being a team leader. And when that happens, your success depends on your team member’s willingness to go the extra mile. (Hint: if you are not yet a team leader, read this anyway because the time to practice is now, and besides these strategies work at home too. That’s why I’m using the term team/family members in this article.) In other words, do try this at home.
Catch Team/Family Members Doing Things Almost Right
The reason why it is so tough for most of us to catch team/family members doing things right is because most of us were taught to manage others by catching them messing up. Someone even gave it a name—management by exception (MBE).Unfortunately, most people will live up or in this case down, to your expectations. To reverse this, you will need to learn to catch team/family members doing things right—no wait, let me modify that—catch team/family members doing things almost right! The problem is that some of your team/family members just have a tough time getting it right, especially if right is defined as the way you would have done it.
But you must go further; you must compliment or recognize that positive performance in some way. In other words, you need to master how to practice management by appreciation (MBA). Although difficult to internalize (it’ll take at least 21 days of consistent effort on your part), this is a more powerful strategy than you will ever learn in any university MBA program because it will help you build a positive organizational climate that will boost performance.
Catching team/family members doing things almost right means you use your abundant mental energy to look for your team/family members moving in the right direction, instead of using the same amount of energy to catch them making mistakes. If you look hard enough, you will find that most team/family members do something each day that they feel good about. Find it, and then be sure to make a big deal about it. And to get the most bang for your MBA, do it in public whenever possible.
If you still find yourself slipping back into old habits, use the 10-penny system. Put 10 pennies in your left pocket or, if you don’t have pockets, the left side of your desk. Every time you catch someone doing something almost right and let her know about it, transfer one penny from your left pocket to your right pocket. When you catch someone messing up or you provide negative reinforcement, reverse the process; this time move three pennies back to the left pocket. At the end of the day you ought to have all the pennies in your right pocket. If not, start the next day with whatever number of pennies you have in each pocket. Too complicated? Then use the “rubber band system.” Wear a rubber band on your wrist. And whenever you catch someone making a mistake and let him know about it, pull the rubber band really hard—you’ll catch on pretty quickly. Continue doing this until you have developed the new habit of practicing MBA and you’ll help your team/family members boost performance. (If you would like help with this read Winning Management [C188] It is approved for 28 CPEUs. Available at http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/C188CPEcourse.htm.)
Make Work/Home Fun
I suggest you live by the axiom if it’s fun it gets done. So ask yourself: Are my team/family members having fun yet? Better yet ask them. You see, it’s very hard to be motivated and energized if work/home is a big pain. Ask several team/family members to serve on a “celebration team.” Give them a budget. Now ask the celebration team to get together to identify specific things they are planning to do each month that are fun. Tell them anything goes, provided that they stay within their allocated budget and it does not violate any laws, rules, or regulations.
Place Team Members in Positions that Enable Them to Build on Their Strengths
Typically team members who love what they do are building on their strengths. So find out what your team members love to do and do everything in your power to place them in those positions. What if you can’t achieve a match and end up losing them? (This paragraph applies only to team members. Unless of course you’d like to, at least occasionally, get rid of certain family members. Smile already.) Think about it: Would you rather have team members who love what they do, or ones who whine and complain all the time? Even your most dedicated team members are going to get burned out real fast if they don’t love what they do. So you would be much better served getting team members in positions that enable them to build on their strengths even if you lose them. And remember that the department or other organization that inherits one of your employees will be much more likely to reciprocate in the future.
Be a Positive Role Model
Attitudes, just like colds, are catching. Positive attitudes are caught just as easily as negative attitudes. The only problem is that negative attitudes suck the energy out of your team/family members like a giant sponge. On the other hand, positive attitudes are like the little energizer bunny; they will keep your team/family members going and going and … well you get my drift. To build a positive attitude, become aware of your conversations, including the ones that you have inside of your head. Recognize that positive language energizes you and negative, cynical, “stinking thinking” conversations de-energize you. Make it a practice to say positive things, especially about other people, or say nothing at all. Also recognize that your mind can hold only one thought at a time. It can be positive or negative, either way it is your choice! So when you catch yourself thinking positive thoughts, congratulate yourself. On the other hand, when you are thinking negative thoughts, catch yourself, and change those thoughts. Remember, research has confirmed that your team/family members take their cues from you! You must be the role model for the kind of behaviors you want them to exhibit.

6. HUMOR BREAK
Conversation between consultant and manager:
Consultant: Do you have a plan for retaining your best team members?
Manager: I do my best to consistently belittle them until they believe that no other employer will hire them.
Consultant: Doesn’t that demoralize them?
Manager: Yes, but if everyone is demoralized no one can tell the difference.
