EXPERTS WHO EXPRESS UNCERTAINTY ARE MORE COMPELLING
Not only that, subjects participating in studies at Stanford Business
School, were willing to pay more for an "uncertain review"
compared to a "confident review."
ACTION STEP: These studies should be of interest to nutrition professionals
who feel compelled to express certainty whenever they interact with
their clients. For other high-impact communication strategies read The

4. 7 TIPS TO HARNESS THE POWER OF THE MASTERMIND
By Bill Cates, President, Referral Coach International, www.GetMoreReferralsNow.com
If there is one book responsible for creating more millionaires than
any other, my guess is it would have to be Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon
Hill. One of the many concepts he covered was the power of the MasterMind.
He said that when two people get together to brainstorm solutions to
problems, it creates a "third mind" that can think of solutions
and come up with ideas that wouldn't happen with an individual on his/her
own.
Many people call this a Study Group. Regardless of what you call it,
do you have one? Is it bringing you the results you set out to achieve?
I have a MasterMind group I've been meeting with quarterly for about
10 years. If I wasn't getting value from the meetings and the relationships,
I would have stopped long ago.
In this Referral Minute, I'll share a few lessons learned and best practices
that may be of help to you. If you do not belong to a MasterMind or
Study Group, I strongly urge you to form or join one.
1. Who is in the group? Your group can be made up of people just like
you, in your same line of work, or it can be made up of other business
people as well. My group of 5 has two other people who have similar
businesses to mine and two others in businesses that are indirectly
related. By having people from other businesses, we all get fresh ideas
that don't confirm the "industry speak."
2. How many members in the group? I've been in groups like this for
over 20 years. I've found 5-6 to be an ideal number. (I know others
like slightly smaller or slightly larger groups). Since we almost never
meet unless everyone can attend (because we value everyone's unique
perspective), we want to have plenty of energy and creativity, and still
be able to "go deep" with each person's situation.
3. What do you talk about? Most of our meetings consist of the following
items:
- Sharing some recent wins and what we learned from them.
- Sharing some recent challenges and what we learned from them.
- Sharing our revenue goals and actual numbers.
- Brainstorming solutions to problems.
- Setting goals for the year.
- Setting smaller goals to be accomplished between meetings.
4. What else do you talk about? From time to time, we have brought in
"guest experts" or created a special theme for the meeting
that dominates a good portion of the meeting. Bringing in a guest or
creating a theme can bring out ideas and perspectives we might not normally
tap into.
5. How long are your meetings? We are currently meeting for about 7
hours per day - plus 30 minutes of "warm up" time over a continental
breakfast. Whoever hosts the meeting covers this light breakfast and
a more filling lunch. We spread the meetings around and figure that
the person who does not have to drive 60-90 minutes to the meeting,
can spring for the meals. With 5 people, 7 hours is usually enough.
Each person ends up getting about 50-60 minutes of time devoted to their
issues at hand. Members are expected to bring issues and/or questions
to have the MasterMind address. If a member does not bring enough fodder
for conversation, we ask them questions to make sure they are handling
things that we know to be important to them.
6. Do you give referrals or do any business together? Sometimes. We
have definitely referred business to each other over the years. And
we have even hired each other a few times for the other's expertise.
Usually, we just help each other out, but when the "project"
becomes more involved, we'll pay the other person a fair amount for
their help. For instance, one of our members is a terrific management
consultant. I just hired him to do some assessments of the office culture
and climate with my staff and the process has led to some great adjustments
being made within my business.
7. Do you hold each other accountable? Yes! But we aren't always tough
about it. There are many ways to hold people accountable and we have
learned that one size does not fit all. For instance, not having to
put money into the kitty for not making a goal is a good motivator for
me (as long as the monetary amount is large enough to get my attention.)
This is not true for other members of the group. We also check in with
each other and our goal progress in between the quarterly meetings -
to help each other succeed. If you only check in at the meeting, and
a goal is missed, it's too late to do anything about it. We want to
see each other succeed and not just wrap each other on the knuckles
if we don't meet a goal.
There is a lot more to making a great MasterMind group. Perhaps one
of the most important elements is trust. You must create a trusting
environment so people feel safe bringing up topics that may be difficult
for them, but need to be addressed. One way to help build trust is to
hang out in social ways. Invite each other to parties, go on little
adventures together, and be vulnerable at meetings. And always come
from a place of care and concern, not ego and negative judgment. Believe
me, I know that this is not always easy to do, but if you want people
to trust you - so that they will hear your words and want to give back
to you - you have to always respect them, listen to them, don't be too
quick to judge, and never be arrogant (no matter how slight).
I hope you found this article helpful. If you already have a MasterMind
group that is working well, feel free to tell me what you're doing right.
I value your feedback - for my own group - and if I get enough ideas,
I'll share them in a future Referral Minute.

5. HEAR WOLF "HOWL"--I MEAN SPEAK

Recommend me to the meeting planner of your upcoming state or local
dietetic association and I will help make your next meeting a "howling
success." As a way of giving back, I speak to ADA groups at significantly
reduced rates.
6. HUMOR BREAK
Chinese doctor (A) answering questions for his patient (P):
P: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Foods fried in vegetable oil. How getting more
vegetables be bad for you?
P: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise
program?
A: Cannot think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain...Good!
P: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle it get bigger. You should
only do sit-ups if want bigger stomach.
P: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: You crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Vegetable! Cocoa beans best feel-good
food around!
P: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for figure, explain whales to me.
I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about
nutrition and exercise. (I'm aware it's not PC
it's humor, so
please lighten up, and laugh already. It's good for you!)
