2. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE
Physicians need your help
We all know that obesity is of epidemic proportions in the US. However
a new study documents that typically obese patients get very little
help from their physicians. According to the STOP (Strategies to Overcome
and Prevent) Obesity Alliance the vast majority (89 percent) of the
290 primary-care physicians surveyed felt that they were responsible
for helping patients manage their weight, yet most (72 percent) stated
that neither they nor anyone in their office has been trained to effectively
counsel overweight and obese patients.
And while most of the 1,002 adults surveyed separately said they take
responsibility for their own weight, most don't feel they receive adequate
weight management guidance from their physicians. Of those with a BMI
of 30 or above, only 39 percent said a health-care professional had
ever told them they were obese. Of those who had been told they were
obese, almost 90 percent were told they should lose weight, but only
a third was offered any guidance. (That's a monumental opportunity for
RDs!)

and maintain their weight permanently read our new CPE course Making

4. HOW TO CONQUER STRESS DURING TOUGH TIMES-PART II
By Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RD, CSP
Once you have mastered the most powerful stress control system of all
time:
--Change the changeable
--Accept the unchangeable
--Remove yourself from the unacceptable;
which I shared with you in my previous eNewsletter (see http://www.wolfrinke.com/NPnewsletter/npnlMar2010.htm)
you will be ready to implement the following seven strategies so you
can start kissing stress goodbye:
1. Hang Out With Positive People
Negative people drain your battery. Positive people charge your battery.
So minimize the time you are together with "stinking thinking"
people.
2. Recognize That You Are Not Your Job
Although we define much of who we are by what we do, you are a lot more
than your job. You get paid what you are worth in the market place,
based on supply and demand, not based on who you are. Getting little
pay does not mean that you are not a worthy person. In fact you may
be the most worthy human being on this planet. (Want to be paid more?
Ready my Win-Win Negotiation CPE program, http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cepd.html#C184.)
3. Get Your Life in Balance
If you're experiencing problems at home and at work, you'll accelerate
the burnout process. So think creatively, and develop a strategy for
balancing personal and professional demands. For example, if you know
you'll be working late all week, arrange to meet your family for dinner
one of those evenings at a nearby restaurant or plan a weekend outing.
Recognize that the most important things in life are relationships--not
stuff! So make time for the real important things in your life: your
spouse, your children, your parents and your friends.
4. Cut the Electronic Umbilical Cord
Too many of us simply no longer know how to recreate. When we leave
work to go home or on a vacation, we not only take work with us, we
are still tied into the office, via pager, e-mail, cell phone or our
"Crackberries." Discipline yourself to turn those things off.
(You are not nearly as important as you think you are.) Better yet,
don't even give out your cell phone number. I use mine only for bona-fide
emergencies. Also, leave work at work, so that you can set aside time
to relax and recharge-recreate yourself.
5. Reduce Your Commuting Time
If you are commuting more than one hour a day it's time to move or get
another job. One hour a day means that you are wasting about 30 working
days per year. Plus, you are already stressed by the time you get to
work. If you must commute, get in the habit of listening to motivational
and educational tapes or CDs--it will reduce your perceived commuting
time dramatically. (If you don't know where to start, go to www.easyCPREcredits.com,
we have several CD based CPE programs to choose from.)
6. Find A Boss Who Knows How To MBA--Manage By Appreciation
If you report to a toxic boss, someone who constantly "builds you
down," or who practices Seagull management, it's time to look for
a new boss, or at least stay away from your current boss as much as
you can. (Seagull management is when the boss flies in, makes a lot
of noise, craps on you and flies away. [Finally I got you to laugh.])
If you are a management RD and the shoe fits, you owe it to yourself
to devour one of my powerful "Winning Management" CPE programs
http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/cemgt.html.
7. Move Your Body
We've made our lives too simple. Make yours more difficult by parking
in the farthest spot on the parking lot, taking the stairs, hand mowing
your lawn, walking to the store and so on.
See the next issue of this eNewsletter for eight more powerful stress-busting
strategies.

6. HUMOUR BREAK
The woman applying for a job in a Florida lemon grove seemed way too
qualified for the job.
"Look Miss," said the foreman, "do you have any experience
in picking lemons?"
"Well... as a matter of fact, Yes!" she replied. "I've
been divorced three times."
