2. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE
Your patients may be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and may
not know it
Between 7% and 10% of the world's population are thought to suffer from
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a painful digestive disorder that is
difficult to diagnose and has no cure. IBS affects twice as many women
as it does men, and most people who suffer from it don't see a doctor.
Symptoms include pain, gas, cramping or bloating, and diarrhea or constipation.
IBS has long baffled gastro-intestinal experts. Some think it is caused
by imbalances in gut bacteria; others point to psychological stress.
Now, a small but growing contingent of specialists is focusing on food
intolerances as a possible culprit-and a new dietary approach, called
the low-FODMAPS diet, is gaining attention.
A recent study, published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics,
found that more patients in the low FODMAP group reported satisfaction
with their symptom response (76%) compared to the standard group (54%,
P=0.038). Researchers concluded: "A low FODMAP diet appears to
be more effective than standard dietary advice for symptom control in
IBS."
ACTION STEP: Get up to speed on the FODMAP approach and help your patients
manage their IBS symptoms and improve the quality of their life. See

4. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TOXIC BOSS
by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, CSP
An e-mail signed by 'Frustrated' posed this question: "I'm afraid
of my boss. He is outright mean to me and I feel like I have very little
chance of doing anything right. How do I overcome this situation?"
Since some of you might also have a boss spelled backwards, that is
a double SOB, here are several strategies that will help you manage
your boss:
Live by: If it's to be, it's up to me
That's right, if you want to change anything, it must start with you!
(I know it is easier to blame your boss.) What we want from others,
we must first give ourselves. Why? Because people, including bosses,
give us back what we give them. And so, if we don't like something,
we first need to look in the mirror where we frequently find answers.
Only you can make the decision to no longer be afraid of your boss!
So make that decision today
then start acting accordingly.
Catch your boss doing things almost right
Bosses, just like you, like to feel good about themselves. If your boss
has "stinking thinking" and tends to focus on your mistakes,
then you need to become his/her role model. You do that by using your
abundant mental energy to look for things your boss is doing almost
right. Then let your toxic boss know about that. So, if your boss gives
you any kind of positive feedback, even just a hint of it, say: "I'm
so impressed that you noticed I've completed that project ahead of schedule.
And you know what? I really feel empowered when you let me know that
I've done something right."
Define your positive expectations
It's weird, but you and I, over the long run, get what we expect. The
next time your boss calls you into his office, enter and say in a positive
tone of voice: "Good morning, boss, what did I do right this time?"
That will send a strong signal that you expect to be recognized not
only for your mistakes, which by the way all of us-including your boss-make,
but also for your successes. But what if your boss really called you
in to give you hell? What you'll find is that this strategy is a little
bit like letting the air out of a hot balloon. I've used this very same
strategy to manage a former negative boss with dramatic positive results.
Find out what your boss does not like to do and do more of it
One of the best ways to establish a better relationship with your boss,
toxic or not, is to help him/her succeed faster. All people have things
they don't really care to do. (Those represent their weaknesses.) Find
out what that is for your boss, volunteer to take responsibility for
those activities, and deliver consistent, positive results. You'll become
an indispensable resource! And your boss will treat you accordingly.
Say good things about your boss or nothing at all
No matter how tempting, do not bad mouth your boss, even if (s)he deserves
it! This admonition applies, even if all your co-workers do it. Talking
negatively about other people takes more away from you than from them.
The reason: People assume that you will talk just as negatively about
them when they are not around. So be sure to only say positive things
about others, including your boss, or say nothing at all.
If all else fails ... quit
Life is short and we spend a great proportion of our time at work. If
you are continually frustrated at work, it's time to get in the driver's
seat of your life and find a boss that appreciates you! Research reported
in the Wall Street Journal confirms that your effectiveness in a job
where you feel unappreciated and out of control is severely reduced.
To make matters worse, the research also shows that your job satisfaction
has a direct impact on your loved ones, especially your children. (That's
right we do take our problems home and vice a versa.) So, if you are
frustrated at work, it's time to find a new boss who will appreciate
you and your strengths. (If you'd like more help with this, read or

6. HUMOR BREAK
A cowboy walks into a cafe with a shotgun in one hand and a bucket of
buffalo manure in the other. He says to the waiter, "I want coffee".
The waiter says, "Sure boss, coming right up". He gets the
cowboy a tall mug of coffee, and the cowboy drinks it down in one gulp,
picks up the bucket of manure, throws it into the air, blasts it with
the shotgun, and then just walks out.
The next morning the cowboy returns with his shotgun in one hand and
a bucket of buffalo manure in the other. He walks up to the counter
and says to the waiter, "I want coffee". The waiter says "Hold
on there. We're still cleaning up your mess from the last time you were
here. What the heck was that all about, anyway?"
The cowboy smiles and proudly says, "I'm in training for upper
management. Come in, drink coffee, shoot the bull s**t, and disappear
for the rest of the day."
