Obesity Appears to Contribute to Migraines
This study analyzed data on 3,862 adults (average age, 47), including 188 who had episodic migraines (EM), occurring an average of 41 days a year. People who were obese (with a BMI of >30) were 81% more likely to have EM than those of normal weight. The researchers concluded: "The odds of EM are increased in those with obesity, with the strongest relationships among those younger than 50 years, white individuals, and women."

4. HOW TO COMMUNICATE AUTHENTICALLY
by Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RDN, CSP
The following strategies are designed to enable you to communicate in a productive, authentic and respectful manner:
Look in the "Mirror"
Interpersonal communication always involves at least two people. Unfortunately you can't control the other person. What you have left to control is you. So take a look at yourself to find out how you present the "truth" and what effect it has on others. There are pretty good chances that if others tend to typically react negatively to you, the answer might lie in the "mirror."
Distinguish Between Fact and Fiction
Always tell the person you are communicating with what you perceive as fact, and where you are making inferences or assumptions. Without this clarity, you might find yourself slipping into lies, misconceptions and distortions.
Stay Calm
Let's face it, it is much easier to communicate authentically when you're calm and centered instead of stressed, angry or rushed. If this is a challenge for you, you may want to figure out which stress reduction techniques work for you. To help you with this you may want to devour our Beat the Blues (http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/C242CPEcourse.html) or our Yoga and Meditation CPE programs (http://www.wolfrinke.com/CEFILES/C221CPEcourse.htm).
Define Expectations
When you and others know what's expected, which you can achieve by "reality testing", things tend to work more smoothly and there is less reason to make up fibs or lies.
Be Comfortable Apologizing
You can avoid lying or bending the truth by saying the following liberating phrases like you really mean it:

  • "I made a mistake."
  • "I don't know."
  • "I misunderstood."
  • "I changed my mind."; or
  • "I'm sorry, I dropped the ball."

When you've made a mistake, take a deep breath, admit the mistake, and apologize for your actions or behaviors. Not only will you get rid of your sense of guilt and stress, the apology will engender empathy and help repair any damage that may have been done. Always remember that accepting full responsibility for all your actions without even a shadow of a white lie demonstrates to yourself and others that you have high levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy. The result: Others will trust you, look up to you, and want to follow or serve you.
Speak from the Heart Not the Head
When you are totally honest with yourself and others, you will experience the liberating force of speaking from the heart not the head. That allows you to speak fluently without having to think about what you said the last time.
Find a Role Model
Make it your goal to find someone who is authentic and honest in every way. Observe, replicate and model that behavior. Or better yet ask that person to coach you so that you have no need to lie ever again, become more authentic and be well on your way to become a highly effective power communicator.
Another critical component of communicating authentically is to be congruent which you can achieve by physically and emotionally embodying these three desires:
The Desire to be Fully Open
Of the three desires, this is the most important, because communication effectiveness can be dramatically enhanced through self-disclosure. As we just discussed in the previous section, when you speak from the heart you never have to check your internal or external computer to figure out what you said the last time. You can just be yourself.
There are two reasons why self-disclosure improves communication effectiveness. First, self-disclosure legitimizes mutual disclosure. Once a person reveals closely held information to another, that person in turn will be more likely to share information that he previously hoarded. As a result, people get to know each other better, become more comfortable with one another and are more likely to trust each other. It also means that you are fully transparent, honest and forthright. This kind of openness feels very risky to many people until they try it out and find that their communication effectiveness is dramatically enhanced, and they are able to build more lasting, stronger and richer relationships.
The Desire to Fully Connect
Once you've opened up to your listener it's time to fully connect which you can achieve by applying these five strategies in tandem:

  • Strategy #1: Like People the Way They Are, Not the Way They Ought To Be. This strategy is all about unconditionally accepting others.
  • Strategy #2: Understand the Other Person's Point of View. This strategy requires you to recognize how things sound, look and feel to others. In other words, experience the world through the other person's senses.
  • Strategy #3: Look For Commonalities. Similarities establish a positive bond with the listener and create goodwill and trust.
  • Strategy #4: Build Rapport. Rapport is the quality of harmony, recognition and mutual acceptance that exists between people when they are at ease with one another and when communication flows freely.
  • Strategy #5: Express Appreciation. People who feel honestly appreciated will be much more receptive to you.

The Desire to Fully Tune In
This is concerned with your desire to discover the other person's emotional state, which means that you have to fully tune into all verbal and non-verbal messages so that you can respond to them and adjust your message in such a way that the other party will stay tuned into you. One of the most powerful ways this is accomplished is to get really great at asking questions.
Using these three desires in tandem will enable you to achieve authenticity that will build powerful bonds with others, and improve your personal and professional effectiveness.
