OVERVIEW AND INSTRUCTIONS

Welcome to the pre-approved, accredited CPE program for Skinny Liver: A Proven Program to Prevent and Reverse the New Silent Epidemic—Fatty Liver Disease. The program consists of a book of the same title by Kristin Kirkpatrick and this study guide. This CPE program is designed to help you understand the basic risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as well as the dietary interventions that may be appropriate for NAFLD patients. It is also designed to help you earn 16 Level 2, Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs).

To get the most out of this CPE program, it is suggested that you adhere to the following four steps:

  • Review the objectives in this study guide.
  • Read and study the book.
  • Assess what you have learned by answering the self-assessment questions in this study guide.
  • Compare your answers to the answer key, which you will find at the end of the study guide. If you scored at least 80% (40 questions) correct, you have completed the program and are ready to transfer your answers to the CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION REPORTING FORM in front of this study guide. If you scored less than 80% correct, re-read the appropriate sections of the book and re-test yourself until you score at least 80% (40 questions) correct.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this CPE program you will be better able to:

  • Recommend foods that fit into an appropriate eating plan geared towards liver health;Apply findings from research when counseling clients about prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD);
  • Communicate the benefits of weight loss and improved dietary choices for the treatment and reversal of NAFLD;
  • Apply knowledge about functions of the liver and how the liver is impacted by various dietary and lifestyle choices;
  • Assess various methods of reducing added sugars and/or refined carbohydrates in the diet;
  • Recommend foods and lifestyle habits that have been shown to have a positive impact on the liver;
  • Evaluate variables affecting the risk of type 2 diabetes, and NAFLD;
  • Evaluate key exercise and stress management components for existing NAFLD patients;
  • Recommend methods to reduce alcohol in the diet of NAFLD patients;
  • Apply knowledge regarding the role of alcohol and liver health;
  • Recommend appropriate exercise to enhance liver health.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR OF THE STUDY GUIDE

Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RDN is the lead dietitian and manager of Wellness Nutrition Services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a best-selling author, an experienced presenter, and an award-winning dietitian. Kristin has been seen on both local and national shows such as the TODAY show, NBC Nightly News and the Dr. Oz show, and has contributed to several national newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TIME, Runners World, Oprah, Martha Stewart Living, Food Network, Costco Connection, Self and Womens Health. The Huffington Post named Kristin “one of 35 diet and nutrition experts you need to follow on twitter.” Kristin’s show “The New Rules of Food” began to air nationally on PBS in December, 2017.
Kristin’s career began in Washington, D.C. where she assisted in lobbying efforts for Medical Nutrition Therapy reform on behalf of the American Dietetic Association Policy and Advocacy group. She then went on to become the Regional Coordinator of the Montgomery County, Maryland Hearts N Parks program. During her time with Hearts N Parks, she designed, implemented and measured health promotion programs within the Washington, D.C. metro area. Kristin then returned to Ohio to work for the Cleveland Clinic's Department of Cardiovascular Genetics. She eventually became the lead dietitian in the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.
Kristin is a sought after national speaker on a variety of nutrition and wellness related topics. In addition, Kirkpatrick writes for TODAY.com, the Huffington Post, US News and World Report and is a featured expert on Cleveland Clinic's Health Essentials. Kristin also serves on Dr. Oz’s Medical Advisory Board as well as the Advisory Board for Lose it! In January 2017, Kristin published her first book, Skinny Liver: A Proven Program to Prevent and Reverse the New Silent Epidemic—Fatty Liver Disease.
Kristin has over 17 years of experience in the health management area, holds a MS in Health Promotion Management from American University in Washington, D.C., and a BA in Political Science from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She is licensed as a Registered Dietitian in the state of Ohio. In May 2012, Kristin received the Ohio Outstanding Dietetic Educator of the year award and, in 2013, received alumni of the year her high school, Gilmour Academy.
In her free time, Kristin enjoys running, reading, and spending time with her husband Andy, her two sons Jake and Boden and their goats and dogs in their home outside of Cleveland.

ABOUT THE EDITOR OF THE STUDY GUIDE

Wolf J. Rinke, PhD, RDN, CSP is the president and founder of Wolf Rinke Associates, a company that has provided high quality CPE programs to nutrition professionals since 1990.
He earned a BS at Drexel University, a MS at Iowa State University, a PhD in Continuing and Vocational Education (Adult Ed) at the University of Wisconsin, and interned at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He participated in a test item writer workshop sponsored by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
Wolf is a past Adjunct Associate Professor, Graduate School of Management & Technology, University of Maryland, and a former Adjunct Faculty Member, School of Continuing Studies, The Johns Hopkins University.
He is the past president of the DC Dietetic Association and has been honored by the Academy with the Award for Excellence in the practice of Management; the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award; the Outstanding Service Award; and has delivered the Lenna Frances Cooper Lecture.
At the Academy he has served in numerous leadership roles including Chair, Scholarship Committee, DBC; Chair, Communication Committee, CDR; Chair, Area Coordinating Committee, COE; Chair, COE, and member of the Resource for Education Programs Committee; Honors Committee; CDR, Licensure Panel and Ethical Practices Task Force; CDR; House of Delegates and Board of Directors.
He is the author of more than 500 articles, numerous CPE self-study programs, and several popular books including Make It a Winning Life: Success Strategies for Life, Love and Business; Winning Management: 6 Fail-Safe Strategies for Building High-Performance Organizations; and Don’t Oil the Squeaky Wheel and 19 Other Contrarian Ways to Improve Your Leadership Effectiveness.
