The program consists of a pocket guide of the same title by Marion J. Franz, MS, RDN, CDE, Jackie L. Boucher, MS, RDN, CDE, and Raquel Franzini Pereira, MS, RDN and this study guide. This CPE program is designed to assist registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) in providing high-quality, evidence-based nutrition care to clients with lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, overweight and obesity and to clients with combinations of these conditions. It is also designed to help you earn 10 Level 2, Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs).

To get the most out of this CPE program, it is suggested that you adhere to the following four steps:

  • Review the objectives in this study guide.
  • Read and study the pocket guide.
  • Assess what you have learned by answering the self-assessment questions in this study guide.
  • Compare your answers to the answer key, which you will find at the end of the study guide. If you scored at least 80% (40 questions) correct, you have completed the program and are ready to transfer your answers to the CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION REPORTING FORM in front of this study guide. If you scored less than 80% correct, re-read the appropriate sections of the pocket guide until you score at least 80% (40 questions) correct.

  • Evaluate documented effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) provided by Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) for dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and weight management.
  • Apply the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (AHA/ACC) and National Lipid Association (NLA) medical therapy recommendations for the management of dyslipidemia.
  • Implement the Eighth Joint National Committee on Management of High Blood Pressure medical therapy recommendations for hypertension.
  • Apply the American Diabetes Association (ADA) medical therapy recommendations for diabetes management.
  • Implement AHA/ACC/The Obesity Society (TOS) and Endocrine medical therapy recommendations for the management of overweight and obesity in adults.
  • Integrate evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines for lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, weight management and combinations of these conditions into the first step in the nutrition care process (NCP)—nutrition assessment and reassessment for follow-up nutrition care.
  • Identify and label nutrition diagnoses for lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, weight management and combinations of these conditions.
  • Formulate goals, determine plans of action, and integrate medical nutrition therapy interventions into overall lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, weight management and combinations of these conditions into disease management.
  • Implement nutrition education and nutrition counseling strategies that integrate MNT for lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, weight management and combinations of these conditions into disease management.
  • Monitor, evaluate and measure MNT outcome indicators for the management of lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, weight management and combinations of these conditions.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS OF THE BOOK

Marion J. Franz, MS, RDN, CDE is a nutrition/health consultant with Nutrition Concepts by Franz, Inc. She has authored over 250 articles, books, booklets, and book chapters on diabetes, nutrition, and exercise and lectures frequently in the United States and internationally. She is the lead author on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, author of American Diabetes Association nutrition position statements and technical reviews, and co-editor of the American Diabetes Association Guide to Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes, 1st and 2nd editions. She has received numerous awards including the 2001 American Diabetes Association Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes, the 2006 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Medallion Award, and the 2012 American Association of Diabetes Educators Living Legend Award.

Jackie L. Boucher, MS, RDN, CDE is President of Children’s HeartLink in Minneapolis, MN. She leads an organization focused on training doctors and nurses in underserved parts of the world to diagnose and treat children with heart disease, ensuring they receive quality care. She has more than 25 years of experience in health care, education, public health and research, focusing on preventing and treating obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. She has been an active volunteer for the American Diabetes Association, serving on the Postgraduate Course and Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, as Associate Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Spectrum, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics including the Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She has numerous publications as well as frequently lectures for professional organizations.

Raquel Franzini Pereira, MS, RDN for 20+ years has been helping people from all walks of life take steps to achieve their optimal health and well-being. Recently, she served for over seven years as community project manager for Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project. Raquel has co-authored conferences and a book chapter. She is a co-author of this Pocket Guide from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

He earned a BS at Drexel University, a MS at Iowa State University, a PhD in Continuing and Vocational Education (Adult Ed) at the University of Wisconsin, and interned at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
